The way I understand The Trinity from the book 7 Secrets of Shiva by Devdutt Pattanaik:

If we live per Brahma, we hoard wealth and power, use science, culture, and yagnas to protect us from death, hunger, and nature. We don’t seek Brahma because at basic level we are Brahma.

If we live per Vishnu, we believe good karma will bring us good. We use culture for maximum good. Vishnu visits us in avatars to show us how to live practically within our limitations.

If we live per Shiva, nothing really matters because we don’t fear death or pain, nor do we desire. We know our souls are immortal and so is the universe. Shiva won’t visit us but we can engage him through meditation so that his bliss destroys our pain and fear.
